Hey! You’re here! Thank you.
Sometimes my brain is my friend. Sometimes she wakes me up at 3am because the early bird gets the worm except in this case I am the bird and the worm is an infinite list of things to worry about. I have had a few 3ams like this recently. Good news is I get to practice my mindful/self-soothing exercises in live time - yay!
Me when my therapist asks if I have ever tried meditating:
My first practice is pretty simple: I make a list in my head of all the books I want to read and I picture the covers. I know this might sound unhinged, but most of the time it works for me. Except when I realize that even if I retired right now and did nothing but read and guzzle iced coffee for the rest of my days, I still probably couldn’t read them all. At this point I am usually more stressed than when I started.
This is when I try to pick five good things. Not five great things, not five life-changing things, not five solutions to five problems - just five good things that make me feel like the door inside my chest is swinging open just a little.
I count out the five things on five fingers. I repeat the five things like a poem. Sometimes, it helps.
Anyways, here are my five good things:
Reading in community
If I read a book and I think I love it but also it’s so weird and out of left field I need a second opinion, I know who to call. The book is All Fours by Miranda July and the friend is
. If I read a super hyped book and it is really grinding my gears/doing nothing for me, I know who to call. The book is Real Americans by Rachel Khong and, once again (lol), the friend is . Melissa really showed up for me this month let me tell you. I mostly want to be left alone with my books and my little thoughts, but turns out I also need to talk that shit out with other nerdy introverts. It needs to be said that I wouldn’t even know Melissa or many of my other nerdy besties if
had not decided to turn her passion for books into a podcast and the greatest book community on the internet. Bless book people! The WNBA
I love women’s basketball, by which I mean I love basketball. On Monday night I watched a WNBA game at 7pm on ESPN. This might not seem like a big deal, but as someone who has been trying to watch WNBA games every summer for the last ten years, turning on the tv and seeing these athletes compete in prime time is everything. It is week two of the season and it was playoff level energy. I love all of it - the storylines, the drama, the comebacks, the attitude, the ferocity, the outfits, the queerness. This season is going to be insane and if you are even a little sporty spice, you simply must tune in.
Dunkin in my lap, reading poetry
To be clear, I was the one reading the poetry. Dunkin just saw an open lap and an opportunity.
The quest for the perfect Dunkin order
Rebecca and I are on a quest to discover, once and for all, the perfect iced coffee order from Dunkin (Donuts not Dog). It’s a serious undertaking and a journey that has no end. Whether you asked for it or not (you didn’t), I will keep you posted.
We place our orders on our phones because we are too self-conscious about placing complicated orders in the drive-thru (we’re talking one pump vanilla swirl, one pump caramel, one pump coconut flavor shot, extra shot, extra ice type stuff), but I always go in to pick up our order. This might be a me thing, but going into Dunkin always makes me so happy. There is always someone sitting at one of the little tables reading the paper and enjoying a steaming cup of joe. There is always someone waiting in the line like salvation is on the other side of the counter (it might be). More likely than not someone will call someone else “hun.” I know I am romanticizing here, but please can I have just this one nice thing?
I love New England.
Yaya in Juicy
Not to brag, but we recently won the lottery, by which I mean we purchased a Juicy Couture harness for Yaya at Home Goods.
Capitalism is a trap and I fear we are in too deep.
Hang it in the louvre.
Queen shit.
Yes she rides in the car on two dog beds piled on top of one another princess-and-the-pea style……. what of it??
Tell me some good things in the comments.
Drink some water, pull your shoulders away from your ears.
Those reminders are mostly for me, but feel free to use them if you need.
I love you.
Love,
Rosamond
Thank you for being the receptacle for my approximate 1,476 texts per week about books. How did I ever get through weird/bad books without you??
I love Yaya’s fashion sensibilities. She reminds me of myself in 2004. Legendary.
